Meets : ORCA Masters Swimmers Compete at Nationals and Minnesota Long Course Meet

Three Rochester Swim Club ORCAS Masters swimmers competed at the 2010 Masters National Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia on May 20-23. This was the final Short Course (25 yard) meet of the season. The ORCAS compete as part of the larger ‘Minnesota Masters’ team.

The ORCAS were led by Nancy Kryka, who swam in 6 events, setting all new Minnesota State Records (55-59 age group). She had all top 10 finishes, placing second in the nation in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 400 individual medley. She was 3rd in the 100 and 200 individual medleys and 7th in the 100 freestyle. These results, as well as other events she competed in at the Zone meet last month put her in the preliminary top ten listing in the nation for 2010 in the following events, lead by a 4th place standing in the 200 fly. Other top ten swims for her are: 50 free/5th, 100 IM/5th, 200 IM/5th, 100 fly/6th, 400 IM/7th, 50 fly/10th.

Loralie Langman also competed in Atlanta at her first Nationals, garnering best times in all three of her events in the 40-44 age group (100/200 freestyle and 100 backstroke)and 2 top 30 finishes.

Ellen Youngers rounded out the group (50-54) with best times in 4 of 6 events, finishing 7th in the 200 breaststroke and 11th in the 1000 freestyle.

At the Minnesota Long Course (50 meter course) at the University of Minnesota on May 15th, Kryka swam three events in her age group, took 1st place in all and set Minnesota State Records in all events also. New state long course records for Kryka include: 50 meter freestyle and the 200 and 400 meter individual medley events.

Also at the Minnesota long Course meet, ORCA Masters Swimmer Babs Larsen set new state records and finished first in the 50 meter backstroke, 50 meter butterfly and 400 meter individual medley. She also finished first in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke.

Rochester Swim Club ORCAS Masters swimmers will next be competing in various open water and triathlon events throughout the summer, as well as Long Course Nationals in Puerto Rico. Bryan Bachman will be making an English Channel swim in August.

The ORCAS Masters team has been coached for many years by John Sfire, who has recently retired. He has been the driving force behind the growth in the Masters program for the ORCAS.
